Achill Island Lifeboat Station stands at Kildavnet on the southern tip of Achill Island in County Mayo, in the shadow of Carrickkildavnet Castle, a tower house associated with the pirate queen Grace O’Malley. Its all-weather lifeboat covers Clew Bay and the Atlantic coast of Mayo.

History

In November 1995 the RNLI decided to place a lifeboat at Kildavnet for a one-year trial, to fill the long gap between its stations at Ballyglass, 43 nautical miles to the north, and Clifden to the south. The station opened in August 1996 and proved its worth, becoming permanent. Since 1999 it has operated a Trent-class all-weather lifeboat, Sam and Ada Moody.

Visiting

The lifeboat is moored in Achill Sound below the castle, on the Atlantic Drive scenic route round the south of the island.
