Sheerness Lifeboat Station is at Garrison Point in the old dockyard at Sheerness, on the Isle of Sheppey, where the River Medway meets the Thames Estuary. Its lifeboats cover a huge area of busy shipping lanes, sandbanks and tidal flats in the outer estuary.

History

The station was established in 1969, when the RAF withdrew its search and rescue helicopters from RAF Manston and the RNLI placed extra lifeboats on the Thames Estuary to fill the gap. It has grown into one of the busiest stations on the east coast. Since 2021 it has operated a Shannon-class all-weather lifeboat, Judith Copping Joyce, alongside a D-class inshore lifeboat.

Visiting

Garrison Point is within the working port, but the lifeboat can often be seen from the seafront at Sheerness, which looks out over the estuary to Southend.
