St Catherine Lifeboat Station
St Catherine Lifeboat Station is on the north-east coast of Jersey, beside St Catherine’s Breakwater, the long Victorian pier built as part of an unfinished naval harbour. Its fast inshore lifeboat answers calls along Jersey’s east coast and out towards the French coast.
History
In 1964 the RNLI introduced small, fast inshore lifeboats to answer the growing number of emergencies involving swimmers, small boats and people cut off by the tide. St Catherine was one of the stations set up in this second wave, opening in October 1969 with a D-class inflatable. A new boathouse was opened in 1984, and since 2010 the station has operated an Atlantic 85 inshore lifeboat, Eric W Wilson.
Visiting
St Catherine’s Breakwater is a popular walk and fishing spot, and the bay has a café. Mont Orgueil Castle at Gorey is a short drive to the south.
